At work today, I decided to put on a mix of some old music from the early 90′s that I used to listen to a *lot*, and it evoked a really interesting memory: As the music was playing, I had the distinct memory of watching a CD spin through the window of a portable compact [...]

So, I installed the slimserver version 6.2.1 on my new Fedora Core 4 x86_64 Athlon machine and had some trouble starting up. For google’s search sake, I’ll list the problem here: # service slimserver start Starting SlimServer: Had to create DBI::_dbistate unexpectedly at /usr/lib64/perl5/5.8.6/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/DynaLoader.pm line 253. I like to think of my music collection as my own radio station. Its like a radio station in that sometimes I hear something that I really like that I didn’t even know I had. The other day it was a track by Ulrich Schnauss. That I had collected through the Intelligent Toys 2 compilation [...]

Well, I bought a bunch of actual Compact Discs the other day (a had been craving a bunch of stuff thats not available on eMusic.). My new strategy is to encode them as the highest quality mp3s I can. That means using lame’s “-preset insane” setting, which makes 320kbit CBR files. The problem then comes [...]

My EMusic monthly subscription rolls over on the 8th or 9th of every month, so at just about this time I’m scouring their archives for new and interesting content. I’ve finally gotten down my “Save for later” selections down to a minimum, so I’m free to choose some new stuff. So, I during my digging, [...]

Well, poking around on ccmixter.org got me to WebJay (although their site is painfully slow). Then, while reading about the XPSF (an XML Playlist) file, I got a link to Plurn, which is essentially the same as WebJay, but its actually responding in a reasonable fashion. I’m quickly finding that the amount of music on [...]

I had seen this site a while ago, but forgot to blog about it. Its basically a site for publishing and sharing mixes (mash-ups) of content that is licenced under the Creative Commons (cc) licence. For a quick fix, try downloading everything on their editors picks page, or subscribing to the RSS feed there.
