Spammy calls from 800-219-7425
Ever since we bought our new Toyota Prius from Capitol Toyota in San Jose, CA, I’ve been getting spammy calls from 800-219-7425.
Generally, it says “This is the second notice that the factory warranty on your car has expired. You still have time to renew it, press 1 to speak with a representative”.
I’ve spoken with them several times telling them to remove my name from the list and stop calling. They have not. I saw another missed call from this number today (12/26/2008 – the day after XMas!) and decided to do some research. I found a couple of interesting websites. The most interesting is this Press Release from the Missouri Attorney General talking about what they’ve done to try to stop these people.
Additionally, if you’re getting calls from these guys, take a look at telemarketinglawsuit.com, which seems to have some good info on the fact that these guys are a huge scam and are defrauding people left and right, in addition to calling them incessantly and not removing them from their “do not call” lists.
Additionlly, I think that if you have any business with Capitol Toyota in San Jose, CA, that you make sure you get them to sign a release that says that they won’t give or sell your personal information to anyone. I’m completely positive that it’s their fault for putting me on this list.
We are getting those spam calls too!
Did you buy your new Toyota from Capitol Toyota in San Jose?
This has nothing to do with any car you own or any call lists.
They are using fake caller IDs and are using a computer to dial random numbers. This has been going on all summer.
Oddly enough, I’ve been getting these calls lately as well. The problem is that I never gave my dealership (Elk Grove Buick) this number, nor have I ever given it to Toyota or Wachovia, the holder of my vehicle’s title.
I’m inclined to agree with SantaClaraLife. This is completely random and has little to nothing to do with your dealership, or whether you even actually own a car.
I’ve been getting these calls as well. Dumb scams, I don’t even have a car nor even have a license.
I don’t think this has anything to do with toyota either – I’m getting the same (honda in portland, 4 years ago). Hate these people and hope that the whole lot of then goes to jail.
As a few people mentioned–don’t blame your dealer. I’ve taken the “press 2 to remove me” option and the “press 1 to talk to someone” option both. The folks on the line will tell you that they got your info from your car dealer, but I’ve never bought a car. It’s a total scam. At my office, we can hear these calls working their way around the office. Thanks for the web references; I’m going to use them!
I’ve received two calls from these people, one about a month ago and another today, and I don’t even have a car or driver’s license. Sounds like a scam to me. I started talking to a “representative” but they hung up on me when I told them this was the second time they’d bugged me.
From what I understand from my serious research is that AT&T is “renting” information from it’s subscribers and that is how they have gotten our number. You’re going to have to call AT&T directly if you have them and raise hell in order to get anything done. Good luck!
I get calls from these pricks all the time. I think the next time I get one I will string them along by feeding them false info as though I am falling for their BS, and then hang up on them at the last second.
I get these calls all the time. One time I waited to talk to a human and they went through their script and I told them I had 2 ten year old cars and no warranty – ever! They said they could sell me one. I told them I didn’t want a warranty on 2 ten year old cars and I told them to take my name off the list and to not call again. Guess what? yeah. I don’t answer anymore. I really do have two ten year old cars and I live in Texas – so it may not be the dealership that’s feeding them numbers, but you can buy the lists from all the phone companies, it’s not like they have ethics or anything. I don’t see why we can’t track them down and shut them down. Okay, maybe not me but somebody!
I live in Georgia, and I have just started getting calls from these people. The twist in my case is that I’ve NEVER EVEN HAD A DRIVER’S LICENSE – so, yeah, not really worried about the expiration on my theoretical car warranty. So, apparently, they’re sleazy AND dumb.
I get at least 2 of these a month. I never answer so they leave the automated messages. Next time they call, if I have 20 minutes to kill I will answer and have a little fun.
i’m only 18 years old, i have no car, and no license, i keep getting a call from that number too. i stayed on the line to talk to the representative and as soon as i said i don’t have a car, the guy hung up. i was getting these calls at my house in ny starting in july of last year, starting last fall i go to school in ohio and i’m getting the calls on my cell phone. its starting to piss me off.
i’m also getting calls from them. don’t own a car either. the fact that a scam like this can keep going means that at least someone is buying into it…. people sure are stupid
I get the calls too, and at first I thought it was because of a warranty refund I had requested, but then I started getting the calls on all our cell phones. They are just robo-calling and it has nothing to do with any car dealer.
The website http://www.everycall.us has published FCC complaints about this telephone number, all of them identify the offending company as Warranty Help Desk. Guaranteed this is 100% a scam!
This is the number that you can call to get your name removed, FYI.
